CARRIACOU
- appeal
Dear Friends,
Sincere thanks for all assistance pledged from all regional organizations
and Caricom countries.
Presently in Carriacou we need building materials such like galvanize,
plywood, doors, windows, boarding material, nails (galvanize nails), food
stuffs, exercise books, pencils, tarpaulins, bed sheets, pillows, hospital
accessories (bandages) etc.
Thanks very much for your consideration at this time of devastation.
Respectfully,
Marie Alexis
Chairperson
In
the wake of Hurricane Ivan, United Caribbean, a collaborative effort of
NGO’s and private sector organizations have collected, transported
and distributed nearly half ton of bottled water, first aid and medical
supplies, clothing, non-perishable foodstuffs, baby survival kits and
children’s items in a sincere attempt to assist the Government relief
forces, who are carrying out a sterling effort under severely extenuating
conditions on the island of Grenada.
In
an effort to relieve the pressure on an already stressed environment and
to identify a base close by and accessible to the coastal cities and villages
of northern Grenada affected by the storm, the island of Carriacou was
considered and selected due to our partner’s previous familiarity
and its proximity; a base of operations is a short-term projection for
the near future.
Carriacou can house a short-term pilot operation which will support the
Primary Relief team ‘on the ground’ in Grenada. Its proximity
is such that supplies can be ferried into Gouyave and the surrounding
areas at reasonable cost, and communications and utilities have been re-established;
we are a telephone call and three hours by boat away in the event of an
emergency.
We have met with community leaders on Carriacou, who have benefited from
our guidance and to date( in less than 10 days) we have accomplished some
significant successes.
These include:
Meeting with community leadership to ascertain immediate needs.
Distribution of relief supplies on Carriacou, Gouyave, St. Georges, Grand
Mal ( H2O) and St. Pauls.
Distribution of tarpaulins to residents with roof damages; Many more are
needed.
Assessment of community demographics and SWOT analysis in St. Paul and
Carriacou.
Community Documentation by individual residents of physical and property
damages and losses.
Photo and film documentation of a significant number of property damages,
over 475 to date have been assessed on Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
Meeting with Educational Community.
Co-operation and assessment on relief plan for displaced Grenadian Students.
Schools tour and Photo - documentation of schools damages.
Pharmaceutical Needs of the Princess Royal Hospital already being actioned
by the regional community.
Documentation of vulnerable members of communities ( i.e.: pregnant women,
babies, diabetics and hypertensives) for Petit Martinique, Carriacou and
Gouyave.
Assessment and ascertainment of need for counselors to counteract effects
of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Film and photo-documentation of Princess Royal Hospital and Gouyave Health
centre damages.
Film and Photo-Documentation of some of the vulnerable babies under the
age of 1yr in Carriacou and Petit Martinique.
Baby survival kits distributed, follow up on the kits in Carriacou and
Petit Martinique.
Film and Photo-Documentation of damages to Carriacou and St. Georges churches.
Resident Interviews and Film documentation of some of the damages on Grenada
coastline, Gouyave, St. Georges and Point Salines.

The United Caribbean Primary Relief Team has worked tirelessly to integrate
gently into the Carriacou community which was also extensively damaged
by Hurricane Ivan. To date, we have received significant support from
all with whom we have been in contact, and have toured the island to view
and photo document property damages. We have spoken and interviewed many
of the islands residents and have been warmly welcomed by the Ministry
of Carriacou and Petit Martinique Affairs and the Opposition leader. The
Carriacou Disaster Preparedness Committee, whose correspondence prompted
our Carriacou decision has been extremely cooperative and we are grateful
for all the kind assistance received regionally. The efforts of United
Caribbean are now being supported and augmented by NGO’s teams from
Trinidad and St. Vincent, joining Primary Team 1 on the ground in Grenada
to assist with community rebuilding efforts.
