Team Ministry to Haiti - language preparation

The language of the common people is Creole. French is the national language and is spoken by those who are educated. It is good to know some phrases and expressions to help you out. It will also delight the people to hear you speaking their language. Below are some common expressions you should learn.

GREETINGS:
Bonjou, msye o madam (Good morning, sir or ma’am.)
Bonswa, mezanmi (Good evening, friends.)
Koman ou ye? (How are you?)
M-pa pi mal. (I’m not to bad.)
M-tre byen (I’m very well.)
Sa’k Pase? (What’s happening?)
Orevwa, tout moun. (See you later, everyone.)
Baybay, mezanmi (Bye bye friends)

COMMON QUESTIONS & ANSWERS:
Koman ou rele? (What is your name ?)
Mwen rele ______ . (My name is_____)
Mwen kontan wè ou. (I am glad to meet you.)
Kombyen frè o sè ou genyen ? (How many brothers or sisters do you have ?)
M-gen kat sè e yon frè. (I have four sisters and one brother.)
Kote ou soti? (Where are you from ?)
M-soti Antigua (I’m from Canada.)
Eske ou genyen lajan ? (Do you have money ?)
Non, M-pa gen lajan. (I don’t have any money.)
Kilè li ye? (What time is it ?)
Eske manje-a sou tab ? (Is the food on the table ?)
Non, manje-a poko pare. (No the food is not prepared yet.)
Kibò twalèt la ye ? (Where is the bathroom ?)

COMMONLY USED EXPRESSIONS :
Bondye beni ou. (God bless you.)
Beni swa letènèl (Praise the Lord)
N-a wè pita. (See you later.)
Ou pale twò vit! (You talk too fast.)
Souple, pale pi dousman. (Please, speak slowly.)
M-grangou. (I’m hungry.)
Eske-w ta vle vin manje ak nou?(Would you like to come eat with us ?)
Mèsi pou manje-a. (Thank you for the food.)
Sa se koupe dwat. (That’s finger licking good !)
M-bezwen bwè dlo. (I need to drink some water.)
Mwen fatique. (I am tired.)
Ou pa chita ? or Ou ta vle chita ?(Would you not like to sit for a while ?)
Kabann lan tante’-m (The bed is tempting me ; the bed looks good.)
M-ta renmen pran yon ti repo. (I’d like to lay down for a little nap.)
Vin-la vit. (Come here quick)
M-ap vini kounye’a (I am coming in a moment)
Mwen renmen ou anpil. (I love you very much. Or I like you.)
Nè’g sa-ap anuye-m. (That guy is bugging me to death.)
M-ap pase yon bon tan. (I am having a good time.)
