Ministries Antigua - Haiti relief 2004
Pastor Lafleur does not just talk the
talk, he walks the walk and this was demonstrated in his relief efforts
for Haiti's flood-stricken province Gonaives, when in November 2004
they were struck by hurricane Jeanne, which caused devastating flooding,
starvation and over 3,000 deaths. Pastor Jean Gerald Lafleur and his
team worked frantically to fill containers with food and clothing.
Based at Judgement Square, Haitian native Pastor
Lafleur spearheaded the efforts to collect as much relief supplies
for his people. This was the first time however that he and his
team had included Antiguan personalities to encourage the public
to give.
They included Queen of Carnival 2004 and Jaycees
Queen 2004 Kirsy Rijo-Charles and Miss Teenager 2004 Alline Henry.
Armed with a cup or bucket, the group including Minister
of Help Eugine Humphreys and other volunteers transversed Market Street
calling on the public to give "just one dollar" to help
the people of Gonaives.
The Minister of Help told the press he was involved
in the effort because "the people of Haiti are really in need
and we in Antigua have in abundance. They have been taken for granted
and they are really suffering".
Through his efforts Pastor Lafleur has also received support
for his cause from Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, whom he said had made
a personal donation to his flood ravished country.
"I have made an official closure to what I call phase
one of this venture" he said "I want to thank everyone who has
contributed - from the little man on the street to the Prime Minister,
I also want to thank all the businesses and anyone who came out and lent
their support to Haiti"
The
pastor noted that apart from providing the much needed foodstuff and water
another one of his targets was to get at least 100 children back in school
and provide them with school supplies. Seen here hands of help that
traveled to Haiti to help with the distribution.
Pastor Lafleur said that through his relentless efforts
he had been able to collect EC $14000 in addition to the relief supplies
which he said are vitally needed in his country.
Help came from around the Caribbean as the Prime
Minister of Barbados said: “We must not allow this country (Haiti),
already suffering burdens created by circumstances of history to be further
devastated by natural disaster without benefit of humanitarian intervention.”
Gratitude goes out to all who helped in this time of need.
