LIVING HOPE MINISTRIES - kenya

Key Features:

Area 582,600 sq km. Most people live in the better watered plateaus of the south and west. Much of the north and west is desert. Only 9.5% of the land is cultivated.

Population Annual Growth Density
1990 25,130,000
1995 30,844,000 4.3%
4.2% 43/sq.km
53/sq.km

Capital: Nairobi 2,000,000. Urbanization 20%.
Christian: 82.1%

Economy: Predominantly agricultural, light industries and a major tourist country. Post-independence stability aided good growth, but this was not maintained since 1976 because of recession, oil-debt, drought, high population growth and the corrupting influence of one-party-statism. Much unemployment. Public debt/person $350. Income/person $380 (1.8% of USA).

Politics: Independent from Britain in 1983. Virtually a one-party state for much of the time since then. The reluctance of President Moi to open up the political system to Western-style democracy brought pressure from foreign aid donors to permit multi-party elections in 1993. The election was seriously flawed giving a hollow victory Moi, but leaving the elected representatives of the Luo and Kikuyu, the two dominant peoples, in opposition and parliament suspended. Kenya faces a period of dangerous stability.

Religion: Freedom of religion. Government sympathetic to Christianity. Many Christians in high leadership positions, including the President.

All Statistics taken from Johnstone, P. (1995) Operation World: Pray for the World. OM Publishing: Carlisle.

Work Living Hope Does:

Living Hope Ministries exists to support the church with sound Christian teaching, which is required in Kenya. There is a Bible School in Nairobi and there are also conferences happening in Kisumu, western Kenya.

Some Pointers for travelling to Kenya:

A full British passport, visa and return ticket is required.
Check with your credit card company about the services available for bank machines and the use of traveller's cheques.
Insurance is essential.
You need to be updated with health injections. There are also other numerous jabs that are required. Bring your medical certificates with you.
Bring insect repellent and a mosquito net.
First aid kit.
It is essential to carry your "Yellow Fever" certificate. This is essential for entry into the country.
Be careful to eat clean and well-cooked food with clean hands. Drink only bottled water.
Prayer Points:
Nominalism is a major issue. Nairobi is 80% Christian, but only 12% of the population go to church. Half of the population is under 15 and so youth ministries are vital. Bishop Kiguru (Kenya) writes: Thanks for the vision and concern for prayers on 21/7/2001. It's timely and therefore welcome. We will organise our members to pray with the rest of the world.

For Kenya, Richard asks you to pray for some burning issues.

The review of our National Constitution. This is to take place any time from now and the team is well set. Some of the committee members are Muslims.
The General Elections in 2002 where the next president will be elected. We fear that there could be chaos for no preparations are yet made.
Our economy which has greatly deteriorated with a reported growth of about 0.3% in 2000 against our neighbouring countries, (Tz and Uganda) with 5.3% and 8% respectively.
HIV/AIDS epidemic killing between 500 and 700 people every day.
The growing number of street children, Nairobi leading with over 80,000. Some of the major causes are: Orphaned due to AIDS, prostitution and poverty.
