LIVING HOPE MINISTRIES - Malawi

Permission is requested to showcase the excellent work done by the Living Hope Ministries. Information obtained from http://www.living-hope.org.uk

Malawi Nation newspaper of 27th October, 2004.

Malawi is still sliding into the deep end of poverty despite so many touted strategies to fight it.

Malawi is ranked at 165 out of 177 countries, an indication that it is the 13th poorest country in terms of human development. Last year, she was ranked at 162 out of 173.

Malawi is among the 28 Sub Saharan countries that are projected not to meet the universal primary education goal until 2129 and that of reducing child mortality by two thirds by 2106, 100 years away from the 11 years the goals demand.

Other regions particularly Sub-Saharan Africa are performing much less well. At the current pace Sub-Saharan Africa will not meet the goal for universal primary education until 2129 or the goal for reducing child mortality by two thirds until 2106 – 100 years away rather than the 11 called for by the goals. In three of the goals – hunger, poverty and access to sanitation, no date can be set because the situation in the region is worsening, not improving.

Malawi’s probability of birth and not surviving at the age of 40 at 59.6 percent life expectancy at birth at 37.8 and the national poverty line at 65.3 percent, a situation donors have said needs urgent attention.

41.7 percent of the population lives below the poverty line of 1 dollar per day, while 43 percent of the population does not have sustainable access to an improved water source.

United Nations Development Programme representative and United Nations Resident Coordinator in Malawi Michael Keating said unless Malawi promotes economic growth, gets all children into school and reduces significant infant and maternal mortality and fights HIV/Aids head on, there is still a long way to go to achieve the millennium development goal.
