"Pro-life"
Information sourced from wikipedia.org
The pro-life movement is a political movement opposing
elective abortion on moral grounds and supporting its legal prohibition
or restriction. The term pro-life was coined in 1973 by U.S. leaders
of the right-to-life or anti-abortion movement. The movement formed
as a countermovement in response to feminist pressure to legalize
elective abortion, especially in opposition to the 1973 U.S. Supreme
Court decision Roe v. Wade which legalized abortion at the federal
level.
The pro-life movement in the U.S. is allied with
the Republican Party, and seeks to enact restrictive legislation
such as a Human Life Amendment.
Around the world, those involved in the pro-life
movement generally maintain that the human fetus (and in most cases
the human embryo) is a person and therefore has a right to life.
On the issue of abortion, pro-lifers are opposed by pro-choicers
who generally advocate for women's reproductive rights. The "pro-life"
concept is sometimes broadened to include positions on other issues,
such as opposition to euthanasia and embryonic stem-cell research.
