Reverend
Joseph Atherley
Speaking at the opening service the Minister of State
in the Prime Minister's Office, Right Hon. Reverend Joseph Atherley
said that over the years 'Godly women' had helped to build up the
society, and while they appeared to be a dying breed now, there was
a need for them once again to make a meaningful contribution to the
island's well being.
He noted at present
women made up one third of the island's Cabinet, and while
many Christian women dod not necessarily want to get into
politics, ultimately"God has to have a presence in every
sphere of life and the institution of politics an overwhelming
and prominent force that is part and parcel of the realities
of lives"
Reverend Atherly added that more and more
women were becoming permanent secretaries in Government ministries
and were also taking up top posts all over the private sector. |

|
He also noted that within the Church itself
whereas women were once confined to the roles os Sunday School
teacher or band leader, some had become pastors and had taken
on the leadership roles.
The minister further stated that women of
God had to act as agents for change, not only in the /Church
but in the society as a whole and show discipline, integrity,
honesty and excellence in their everyday activities. |
 |
He
stated that the Church also had to change the way in which it conducted
its affairs. He said the world had become market driven and the
Church had to take on some market dynamics. In that regard he said"
The Church has to look at the products and services it offers to
the world and examine its systems for supply and delivery to see
whether they are appropriate to the market context"
