Teen Challenge is the oldest, largest and most successful program of its kind in the world. In 1958, David Wilkerson author of "The Cross and the Switchblade," became burdened with the desire to help youth, adults, and families suffering from life controlling problems primarily in the area of Drug and alcohol abuse. To counter the feelings of loneliness and alienation, which he found in the street gangs of New York City, he started to take a message of love and freedom into their communities. This was the birth of Teen challenge. Teen Challenge has grown to more than 90 countries worldwide and approximately 500 centers.
