1:1 HISTORY OF TEEN CHALLEGE

Early in 1957, David Wilkerson, a young pastor from Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania, was led by the Holy Spirit to New York City to minister to troubled youth on the streets. After reaching hundreds who wanted help, he found that many needed a long-term residential program. It was then that Teen Challenge was founded to provide a structured, Christ-centered program for those with life-controlling drug and alcohol problems. This is how the ministry of Teen Challenge began.

Today Teen Challenge is a nonprofit, interdenominational, Christian program operating with 250 centers in the US and 500 autonomous locations in over 78 countries internationally.

This Teen Challenge ministry first opened at the old Presentation College facility located at Verdun in St. John in 1996 where it began with one student. In 1997, it developed into a Teen Challenge “Induction and Training Centre” housing 25 students in-house and 6 students in tertiary care. Since then, it has moved to Mapps College Sanford St. Philip, a six and a half acre (6 ½) facility in 1999. Today Teen Challenge has grown to become a vibrant and pivotal men’s rehabilitation center and life-changing ministry.

Teen Challenge Barbados Inc. is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, with the Executive director and staff responsible for the day to day operations. Teen Challenge Barbados is a member in good standing with the community in Barbados and subscribes to the optimum care of each student that passes through its doors.

1:2 OUR PURPOSE

What We Do

1. We minister primarily to men with drug and alcohol problems, who abuse substances on a daily or several-times-weekly basis.

2. We offer help to teens and adults. Our preferred group is 18-45 years of age, with some age exceptions.

3. We believe strongly that as a man yields himself to God, he will change. At all points we preach, teach and counsel that God can change any life – with an emphasis on daily practical application.

4. Our ministry is entirely based upon a relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ, based on interdenominational teaching.

5. Our counseling is not psychological – but Biblical in perspective.

6. We are a Christian discipleship program teaching men to become disciples of Jesus Christ, based on interdenominational teaching.

7. We teach basic life skills, such as responsibility, good work habits, integrity, self- discipline and ethical morality.

8. We prepare our students to reenter society as good citizens, good husbands & fathers and good employees, functioning as “substance-free” individuals.

What We Are Not

1. We are neither a psychiatric facility nor a medical facility. We do not admit persons who have existing mental problems which would prohibit the individual from cooperation with the program schedule and overall agenda of activities.

a. We are not qualified to dispense psychotropic medicines and thus we do not accept applicants requiring these medications.
b. We currently do not make referrals on mental health conditions as we are not a mental health facility and feel it should be the responsibility of the family and a qualified professional.

2. We are not a government agency. We are a non-profit, faith-based, Christian NGO. (Registered Charity)

3. We are not an alternative to jail. All applicants (where possible) must resolve legal issues before entering Teen Challenge.

4. We reserve the right to refuse admission to applicants at our discretion and to dismiss students who disrupt the program.

5. We do not exclude people who are:

HIV positive
Hepatitis A, B or C positive
Ex-convicts, Homosexuals (who are willing to change)
Those with multiple addictions

6. We do not give long-term care to those who are consistently violent, un-teachable, sexually aggressive, Homosexuals (unwilling to change) or game-players. These are character traits that warrant dismissal from the program.

1:3 INDUCTION AND TRAINING PROGRAMS

The Teen Challenge program is divided into two phases – the induction Program and the Training Program -12 months in total for completion.

The Induction Program is four to six months in length, and it is characterized by a strong emphasis on counseling, structure and discipline, and teaching on the basics of Christianity. The program also includes overcoming life problems which cause men and women to become dependent upon drugs and alcohol. Once a student has satisfactorily completed the induction Program, and has met all the requirements necessary, he moves on to further training offered in the Training Program.

The Training Program is eight months in length, and it is characterized by a strong emphasis on Christian education, Christian outreach to churches and the community, and more personal responsibility with less supervision. Acceptance into this program will be based on demonstrating, in the induction program, the following: 1) a strong desire to grow spiritually as a Christian man: 2) maturity; and 3) the ability to handle the academic requirements of the program.

In order to successfully graduate, a student (as we prefer to call them at Teen Challenge) must complete both phases of the program at which time he will receive a certificate of completion. After completion, the student has a period of at least six months to apply all that was learnt in Teen Challenge to his life at work, school, home, church and community. At this time, he will receive a graduation certificate at a formal graduation ceremony.

2:0 ENTRANCE INTO TEEN CHALLENGE’S PROGRAM

2:1 COSTS

The entrance fee to the program is $200. You may bring this fee to Teen Challenge if and when you are given an admission date into the program. Fees can be paid by cheque, money order or cash on your admission day at Teen Challenge. Monthly fees are $500 BBD which are to be paid in the first week of each month. Upon entry each student should bring his N.I.S and National registration cards. The program is largely dependent on free will offerings from concerned individuals, businesses and churches to meet daily costs. The program does receive a small government grant.

To help defray the cost of a student’s time at Teen Challenge, we ask the public to support Teen Challenge by sponsoring a student or students monthly from $20 to $50. Also, provide us with a list of family, relatives, churches, businesses, concerned individuals or friends who may want to sponsor a student monthly. You may want to donate food items, time, skill, equipment or other items; we accept these with open arms.

Other daily operational expenses of Teen Challenge are raised through freewill offerings, newsletters, church meetings, book and tape sales, vocational workshops, farm and a variety of other means.

2:2 HOW TO APPLY TO THE PROGRAM

There are 3 types of interview procedures to gain entrance into the program:

A. ON SITE INTERVIEWS

If you live in Barbados, call and make an appointment for an interview. When given a date, you must apply to the program in person by coming for an interview on –site at the specified time given by the intake coordinator. When you come for an interview, you will be required to read this Program Overview (if you have not done so already) and fill out an application form. You will then be interviewed for possible entrance into the program and be given a brief tour of the Teen Challenge Property.

B. BY MAIL OR FAX

If you are a foreign student and are seeking entry into the Teen Challenge Barbados Program, call us at 246-423-8273 and request a student info package. (you may also want to visit our website) included, will be an application form, Fee structure, immigration information, a Program Overview and other necessary information. Please read the Program Overview thoroughly, and fill out the application form for the program. When the application form has been filled out, send it back to us. Be sure to include a bank draft or money order of $50 BBD (for all foreign students) with your application, (We do not accept personal cheques.) We will then call you to arrange a time for a telephone interview. Depending on the outcome of the interview, it will be determined first, if you are eligible, and secondly, if you are approved for entrance into this program.

C. CURENTLY INCARCERATED

If you are currently incarcerated (in jail or in custody) you may apply to the Teen Challenge Barbados through the prison rehabilitation program. A suitable interview will then be arranged. After being interviewed and if you are approved for entrance into this program, you will then be placed on our waiting list. Upon release from prison it is the responsibility of the student to get to Teen Challenge.

2:3 WAITING LIST

After being interviewed, if we decide that you are eligible and you are approved for entrance into this program, you will then be placed on our waiting list. While on this list you will be required to call every Monday to maintain your name on the list. This usually takes less than 3 weeks, however it may be longer depending upon bed space. You may call any time between 9 Am and 4 PM on Mondays to report in and leave your name for the waiting list.

If you fail to call on a Monday as per our requirements, your name will be moved to the bottom of the waiting list. If you fail to check in after two weeds, your name will be removed from the waiting list and you will have to reapply again from the beginning. In other words, it’s up to you to follow through!

2:4 OTHER RESOURCES

The Teen Challenge Barbados program is not for everyone. It is demanding physically, mentally and socially. Students in the program must be self-motivated to change, physically healthy, mentally competent, emotionally stable, and able to function peaceably in a community setting. If a prospective student is declined for our program, there are other programs in Barbados which may be more appropriate. You may inquire about these programs by visiting your local Telephone Directory under:

(1) National Council on Substance Abuse
(2) Verdun House
(3) Drug Rehab Unit at the Psychiatric Hospital
(4) C.A.S.A. (Coalition Against Substance Abuse)
(5) AA ( Alcoholics Anonymous)
(6) NA (Narcotics anonymous)

3:0 WHAT TO EXPECT

You are entering one of the world’s most successful programs with a track record of over three decades. We provide Bible-based counsel and instruction structure and discipline, along with 24- hour-a-day supervision.

At Teen Challenge, you will encounter the power of God dynamically as your life is changed. You will have the opportunity to make choices that will affect not only your life, but your destiny.

Over the 40- year life of Teen Challenge worldwide, we have learned some principles that may appear “tough” at first. At Teen Challenge you will encounter staff that love you and are vitally concerned about your Christian growth. You will experience an atmosphere charged with prayer and be exposed to some of the finest Christian teaching available. But it will be YOU who will make the decisions.

Remember…we are more interested in the development of your CHARACTER than the provision of your COMFORT. You will always be challenged to yield your life to God.

Our prayer is that God will do a miraculous work in your life while you are here. Many graduates of Teen Challenge Barbados are working today in society, in Christian and other work. This makes us happy; to be a part of what God is doing to help people today. You need to know that no mater what you have done in the past God is able to forgive you, change you – and start you on the road to a new life!

3:1 WHEN YOU ARRIVE

When you arrive at the facility you will be assessed and a treatment plan will be drawn up for you. Your individual plan will be completed through personal work on your part, one-on-one counseling with our team of counselors, group counseling, and our Induction Program curriculum. You will also be assigned a personal counselor who will oversee your progress. We encourage you to discuss specific problems with your assigned counselor who is available to answer a variety of your questions or problems. All counselors are committed to helping you if you are willing to be helped. No amount of counseling will help if YOU do not desire to change and be helped.

Back to Table of Content

3:2 PERSONAL RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS

While at Teen Challenge you are entrusting your life to the care of people who are committed to your healing and growth. We ask for your trust. You show trust by laying down certain personal rights and freedoms. Addicts have learned certain responses that actually cater to their addictive lifestyle. All of the game-playing, manipulation, and street survival techniques that have been a part of your day-to-day philosophy must be laid down. We require honesty with your-self, with God, and with the Teen Challenge staff. A person who is OPEN and TRANSPARENT will be able to FOCUS on his desperate need to be free of his addiction.

The personal rights and freedoms we ask you to lay down while at Teen Challenge include:

  • No relationships with women (unless you are married). We do not have housing of any kind available for wives of children, which means, you will have to make alternate arrangements if applicable. Relationships with legitimate fiancées (a woman you have had a longtime relationship with and are planning to marry) will be put on hold while you are in the Induction Program. At the end of this first phase, under the direction of your counselor, we may allow the relationship to slowly resume. All other relationships with women must be put on hold for the entire time you are in the program. Remember, you are not here to date girls, but to get your life together!
  • You may have only one phone call per week in the Induction Phase and two phone calls also per week in the Training Phase. This includes incoming and outgoing phone calls. The people you may communicate with during the Induction Phase are limited to your Pastor and immediate family only. During the Training Phase, your counselor may add other people to your approved phone and mail list as deemed appropriate.

  • All incoming and out going mail will be reviewed by your counselor. If you are put on discipline your mail will be held by your counselor until your discipline has ended.
  • No talking about your past life around other students. However we do encourage you to talk about your past during counseling of problems concerning your past life.
  • No use of cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, and no fighting. All of these may result in immediate dismissal.
  • No giving your last name or address out to anyone. (This is to protect you from well meaning people who want to befriend you, which can end up causing problems. We have found that these relationships can become detrimental to what God wants to do in your life because they can be distracting).
  • You must be with an approved partner during any group outing and you must have permission to leave the group.
  • Medication is kept in our medication room and is administered by staff only, at set times. All medications must be declared when you enter the program.
  • No alcohol products are allowed (e.g. Mouthwash, cologne, etc.)
  • Hair must be above your collar. No earrings, no boxers, no beards and no “T” shirts promoting not approved lifestyles are allowed.
  • All your money will be put into Teen Challenge bank account on-site, and you will be allowed to withdraw monies for snacks etc. If toiletries are needed a request is made and these items will be purchased by staff. In other cases, a request for items will be made to staff, who will contact parents or sponsors to purchase and bring the items requested. Please be aware that Teen Challenge reserves the right to deem any request inappropriate and/ or excessive. If you leave the program prematurely, any outstanding monies will be returned to the source and not the student. (Unless we are advised to do so). If there are any outstanding bills at Teen Challenge, they must be settled before you leave in order to cash out your account. (Providing the money belongs to the student).
  • If you leave prematurely, we will hold your belongings for up to three (3) days. After this time, anything you gave left behind will become Teen Challenge property, unless you make special arrangements with us to collect the items. Items will be stored up to 1 week maximum. If items are not collected, they will automatically become the property of Teen Challenge Barbados.
  • Your belongings and person are subject to staff inspection at anytime while you are in the program. Upon entrance your belongings will also be inspected

3:3 YOUR DECISION

No matter what your reason for coming to the Teen Challenge, God is willing to help you. We believe that a personal relation ship with Jesus Christ will give you answers and the ability to face and overcome whatever your difficulties. However, you must continue to give your life over to God no matter what you are facing. This will mean that you will have to follow direction given by our staff at all times. We are serious about helping you change your life, so we expect that you must also be serious! This will involve giving up things like street games, manipulation and putting your total effort into the program. We expect you to also be open to consider a personal relationship with Christ, since we believe He is the only one who can permanently change you!

It is important that no one come into the program thinking that he is going to change the program or the staff. You are only responsible to change what needs correcting in YOUR life. At Teen Challenge, you will no longer be able to just “push” your problems aside. You must confront each problem and, with help from God, overcome it. As you overcome your problems, you will be a step closer toward maturity and complete freedom from the problems you were facing when you entered the program.

There are no shortcuts to completing this program!! You will be spending a minimum of twelve (12) months in the Teen Challenge program. In order to graduate you must successfully complete both phases of the program. (According to the requirements and standards set by Teen Challenge) As it has always been……the final choice is YOURS

4:0 INDUCTION PROGRAM

Applicants to the Induction Program must be willing to voluntarily commit themselves to four to six months of training in a strict, disciplined and loving environment. In the Induction Program we expect our students to be serious about changing their lives, working on their problems, and seeking a personal relationship with God.

4:1 MORNINGS

Wake up during weekday mornings is 5:00 AM. All students are expected to get up when wake up is called, make their beds, get properly groomed, and ready for the day. See Daily Schedule.

At 5:15 each morning students are required to be in chapel for personal devotions for fifteen minutes. During this time we want our students to seek a personal relationship with God through prayer and Bible reading. We believe that regular daily devotions are essential to the Christian life, and it is our prayer that the habit of rising early to seek the Lord will be maintained by students for the rest of their lives.

Breakfast is served at 5:30 am after devotions, followed by morning chores. Each student in the program is assigned a different chore on a monthly basis, with chores consisting of mopping, dusting, gardening, raking, sweeping, cleaning washrooms, classrooms etc. Students must have their chores checked before they may leave their assigned area.

At 9:35 AM each morning the entire student body is again required to be in the chapel for a twenty (20) -minute, group chapel service which consists of praise and worship, reading from the Bible, and prayer. Wednesdays we conduct a full-length chapel service for staff and students, with a message usually presented by a guest speaker.

4:2 EDUCATION

The class times are structured differently for Induction & Training Phases (See Daily Schedule). We have two different types of classes here at Teen Challenge Barbados. They are called Personal Studies for New Students (PSNC) and Group Studies for New Students (GSNC).

Curriculum includes courses on the basics of the Christian faith, anger, lust, failure, and evidences supporting the Christian faith. The majority of our curriculum is the Teen Challenge curriculum used in Teen Challenge centers worldwide.

Periodically, guest teachers will be invited for a special one week seminar. The program schedule will then be altered to make provision for this training.

Back to Table of Content

4:3 WORK DETAIL

A regular part of the Teen Challenge program is work therapy (see Daily Schedule). You will be assigned a job to do at work detail, which you are responsible to carry out thoroughly. You may be on the same job for a period of days or even weeks. We are here to teach you not only the spiritual aspects of living, but responsibility, dependability and accountability, which are important in living an effective and satisfying Christian life. This means you must learn good work ethic (habits).

Your job will normally consist of kitchen, maintenance, working on one of our work contracts, or one of the shops (projects) on the property. These include the farm or garden, livestock, carpentry, lawn maintenance, or just plain cleanup.

You will not be paid for any work you do while in the Teen Challenge Program. The tasks you complete during work detail help you to grow and develop Christian character. These are also ways of making an offering back to the Lord for what He has done for you while in the Teen Challenge program.

Back to Table of Content

4:4 RECREATION

Mandatory recreation is regularly scheduled during the week for the purpose of exercise. You will be expected to participate in all activities organized by the staff for that time period. Sports such as road tennis, lawn tennis, walking, volleyball, basketball, soccer and board games are organized.

On the property we have a weight room, lawn tennis court, basketball court, and areas for road tennis and a cricket and soccer field.

Back to Table of Content

4:5 EVENINGS

At 5:15PM each weekday evening students in the Induction Program have free time for one hour. During that time you may use the telephone, relax, study, or spend time in preparation for the next class. At 6:30PM we gave study hall, PSNC or GSNC scheduled. During study hall you are expected to complete homework from your GSNC and PSNC classes. At 8:00 PM students are required to start getting ready for bed during a time we call “dorm life”. At 8:30 PM we call “quiet time” in the dorms where no talking is allowed and students must either pray quietly, read the Bible or a Christian book, or sleep. We call “lights out” at 9:00 PM sharp.

Back to Table of Content

4:6 WEEKENDS

On weekends wake-up is at 6:00 am and the schedule is a bit lighter than during the week. On Saturdays students are required to put in a two to three hours work detail (General Cleaning). At 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM is visiting time where visitors come to visit the students. Those who do not have visitors are given the rest of the day off, unless they are on discipline. We normally show a movie (every first and third Saturday) or the cricket game (in season) in the evenings. On Sundays students are required as a group to go to church for morning and evening services to different churches. Students are given free time the remainder of the day to rest and relax, with an hour of reflection time during the day.

Back to Table of Content

4:7 PASSES AND VISITS

Students in our Induction Program may receive one five hour (maximum) visit on site on Saturdays of each month between 12:00 noon and 5:00 PM. All visitors must be pre-approved, up to a maximum of five persons. It should be noted that your visitors are welcome to stay until 5:00 PM.

Students in the Induction Program are allowed one eight hour pass. (The pass is a privilege and is based upon the student’s progress. Anyone with a bad attitude or demanding or asking constantly about passes will be denied the pass). The Program Director has final say on all requests. Again, these privileges are dependent upon your general progress and attitude in the program.

Back to Table of Content

4:8 MEDICAL

It is the responsibility of each student to ensure all medical issues are dealt with before entry into the Teen Challenge program. All students are also required to have a medical done which includes: 1. HIV test. (2) Hepatitis A, B, and C and all STDS tests, (3) Psychiatric evaluation (where applicable), (4) General medical checkup.
Depending upon the results of the general checkup a student may be denied entry into the program. Teen Challenge is a highly structured program and requires a student to be in good physical health. We do not deny students who are HIV positive or have and STD or Hepatitis A, B, or C into the program, if they can submit to the rigid structure the program offers. Any medical issues which are beyond our care will mean that the applicant may be denied entry into the Teen Challenge program.

Students are responsible for any medical/dental costs incurred while at Teen Challenge. If a student has a medical need, he is to fill out a Student Request form. The staff, in consultation with the student, will make the determination as to what course of action to take. In an emergency (as determined by staff) students will be taken to hospital.

Teen Challenge is not a medical care facility and is unable to provide 24-hour, on-site medical supervision. Therefore, all students entering the program must be in good health and able to participate in all activities in the program. A student may be asked to leave the Teen Challenge program, if his health deteriorates to the point where he is no longer able to participate in the daily activities of the program.

All information regarding a student who is HIV+ will be marked “confidential” and will only be discussed privately with a student for his ongoing care while in the program. His name will be kept on a strictly confidential list for counseling & administrative purposes only. The student will not be permitted to work in our kitchen. He will be properly advised by the nursing professionals working along with the program as to what he should do if he is in a situation in which he could potentially infect others.

Back to Table of Content

4:9 RULES AND DISCIPLINE

For the purpose of developing discipline and structure in your life, Teen Challenge Barbados has rules which we expect you to follow. Failure to follow our rules will mean you will have a behavior report written up on you resulting in consequences. We have three levels of infractions which warrant minor discipline, major discipline or dismissal.

Some of the basic rules we ask you to follow include:

  • Must obey staff and show respect
  • Your bed area must meet our standards
  • You must be on time and prepared for all scheduled activities
  • Follow the dress code for all classes, chapels, graduation services, Sunday church group outings and all scheduled activities.
  • You must shower and shave everyday (when appropriate).
  • No talking during study hall, quite time, after lights out
  • No fighting, swearing, threatening, horseplay, playing pranks, name calling
  • No use of drugs, alcohol, cigarettes

Being put on total discipline, means you are given work assignments during your free time Monday through Saturday, and suspension of ALL privileges.

Privileges denied include

  • No phone calls – except legal or family emergencies
  • No sports at all including basketball, weights, lawn tennis, volleyball, basketball, soccer, cricket, all board games, etc.
  • No use of student bank (except special circumstances)
  • No mail – except for legal matters
  • No passes/visits or applying for passes/visits
  • No snacks during the day and evenings
  • No seconds at meal time
  • No snacks from the pop and candy store
  • No television or recreational movies
  • No music

Please know that there are two sides to love – affection and discipline. The main purpose of discipline is for you to learn. This means it is an opportunity for you to get alone with God, and allow Him to change those things which have caused you to be on discipline in the first place. This is one of the main purposes of the program. Don’t be discouraged if you are put on discipline. Many previous students were on discipline at one time or another. The key was that they learned from their mistakes, and continued to grow in the program! You can too!

Activities, actions, and/or infractions that may result in the dismissal from the program are:

  • Smoking cigarettes, using drugs and/or alcohol.
  • Physical violence toward self or others, or threatening physical harm.

4:11 IF YOU WISH TO LEAVE

If you decide to leave, please sit down and talk to a counselor about why you wish to leave. We won’t try to force you to stay, however, it is important for us to know why! If at some time you want to leave the program, we will not stop you from leaving – so please do not sneak out! Also, do not continually say, “I’m leaving”, or something similar. This could put the thought in someone else’s mind, and you would be responsible for that person leaving the program.

If you are dismissed or leave by your own decision, you should make arrangements to take all your personal property with you. We cannot store your belongings for you longer than 3 days, at which point they will be placed in the “Blessing Room’ for other students who come into the program.

If you leave the program for any reason without notifying a staff member, all your personal belongings left behind will be placed in the “Blessing Room” for other students who come to the program.

Your money (from the student account – this money does NOT refer to fees paid to Teen Challenge for a student for the student’s support whilst at Teen Challenge on a monthly basis, but rather to monies given to students by their parents, guardians, or relatives for student effects like toiletries, snacks, etc.) will be given to you immediately upon departure, if you leave between Monday-Friday, 9am – 5 pm. If the money has been given to Teen Challenge by a parent or sponsor we will return the money to the parent or sponsor unless, they specify that we should give you (the student). On evenings and weekends you cannot receive your monies as the bank safe cannot be opened. We will forward your money to you at the earliest convenience. If you have any outstanding bills (e.g. medical or dental) we will deduct this amount from the total in your account.

4:12 REENTERING THE PROGRAM

When a student leaves the program of his own choice, he may apply to re-enter thirty to sixty days after the date of his departure. When this happens, you will be required to come in for an interview again. You will restart the program again at the beginning of the Induction Phase.

When a student is dismissed from the program, application to re-enter may begin three to six months after the date of dismissal. However, it is at the discretion of the Program Director as to whether or not you will be permitted to return.

If a student has a lapse while in the program he will automatically be accepted to remedy the situation, unless he does not want this intervention. Teen Challenge is willing to help and will welcome anyone who truly wants change with open arms.

4:13 COMPLETION

Completion of the induction Program is based upon the satisfactory fulfillment of the treatment plan and the education curriculum. During the third to fourth month in the Induction Program each student’s progress is assessed. It is at this time that we determine how much longer it will take for each student to complete the Induction Program, from one to four months. Please keep in mind that your goal in the Induction Program is not to complete it in the least amount of time possible, but to get the major problems in your life dealt with – therefore, don’t be in a hurry to rush through the Induction Program.

4:14 THE NEXT STEP

When a student enters his final month in the Induction Program he will go through a review process to evaluate his performance and progress. If the student has progressed well in the Induction Phase, then he will be promoted into the Training Phase. Any student who does not appear to be ready for the more intense Training phase will be kept in Induction for further growth.

5:1 PRIVILEGES AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Students in the Training Program are given greater privileges than students in the Induction Program.

These privileges include the following:

  1. Minimal staff supervision – students are expected to do more with less supervision
  2. Given a greater variety of music to listen to and may have their own CD player.
  3. Move to another dorm.
  4. Eligible for longer passes.

5:2 BASIC AND ADVANCED STUDENTS

Students in the Training Program are grouped into two levels, basic and advanced. Students enter the Training Program in the basic level, and are promoted to the advanced level when they demonstrate growth in maturity and trustworthiness. In the advanced level, students are given additional privileges and responsibilities. This usually happens at the ninth month review.

Advanced students are required to assume leadership responsibilities amongst the Induction Students and their peers in the Training Program. Advanced students will be asked to help supervise Induction activities and asked to help keep their peers in the Training Program accountable for keeping the rules of the program. It is expected that every student in the Training Program should aspire to reach the advance level. Failure to do so will mean that you cannot graduate the program.

5:3 ACCOUNTABILITY

Students in the Training Program are given greater privileges and responsibilities than those in the Induction Program. This is for the purpose of allowing the students to mature into the kind of men who can handle added privileges and responsibility. Students are held accountable for actions by staff and by advanced students. Students who are found taking advantage of their advanced privileges will have a report written and discipline provided accordingly.

5:6 MINISTRY TEAMS

We have determined that outreach ministry is an important part of the Teen Challenge program philosophy. There are benefits not only to the many who receive a special touch from God through participating in a team, but also helpful as a part of the redemptive process while here at the Teen Challenge Barbados.

All students in the Training Program must take part in outreach. These teams include church outreach teams and one of our community volunteer teams (i.e. Youth for Christ, prison ministry, street evangelism).

The following criteria shall apply to any student who signs a written commitment with an Outreach Team:

  • Your word is your bond. If you sign it, plan to follow through without excuse.
  • Outreach is not a holiday, but a vital part of God’s program for you.
  • In all ministry situations, you represent Jesus Christ and Teen Challenge.
  • All rules of the program apply to you throughout your commitment to the team.

5:9 POST GRADUATION – ETP

When you graduate from the Teen Challenge Barbados you may be offered an ETP (Extended Training Program) position for you to continue your growth under the covering of this ministry.

ETP is a six month program which offers the graduate the opportunity to work and train in the Teen Challenge ministry. While an ETP receives a small honorarium (where applicable) and free room and board, he is not classified an employee, but is a volunteer in training.
