TEEN CHALLENGE - VEGETABLE FARMING

Another aspect of the Teen Challenge farm is that of vegetable farming.

We are presently working ½ acre of land with a variety of crops. Our aim initially is to provide the program with vegetables and ground provisions to supplement the daily menus.
In the long term, we want to be able to utilize a greater portion of land to cultivate food crops for the retail market.

This aspect of the Teen Challenge farm provides a daily source of education, work and discipline for our students. In addition, it supplies the kitchen with much needed vegetables and ground provisions which allows the facility to save in the area of food purchases.

Depending on the season, crops such as beans, cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, okras, melons, seasonings, tomatoes, carrots, lettuce and cabbage are grown.

Crops are usually grown every 3 to 4 months dependent upon the “ripening” of the specific produce.
