TEEN CHALLENGE - the farm

Teen Challenge operates a farm that has been developed over the past 2 ½ years into an income generator, a source of food for the kitchen, a vocational component to the program and a facility to teach work ethic and discipline.

Teen Challenge Farm is overseen by a trained qualified professional farmer who has 2-3 students under his care training in animal and vegetable farming. We are also a member of The Barbados Agricultural Society

An investment of BDS $150 000 is all it will take to transform the farm project at Teen Challenge Barbados into a self-sustaining engine for the entire operation and that is what Director, Stephen Gilkes is hoping for.

Chicken farm

Barbados Black Belly sheep

Teen Challenge farms chickens, pigs, cows, sheep, eggs and vegetables.

There are two components to the Teen Challenge farm: livestock and vegetable farming.

Teen Challenge produces 3000 chickens every 4-6 weeks

The Teen Challenge farm currently produces approximately 100 eggs per day, with the objective target of 120-130 eggs per day – 3200- 3400 eggs per month.

Sheep framing is developing. We currently have 21 Black Belly sheep and are rearing the flock to be able to double the present number over a 3-4 month period of time. In August Teen Challenge estimates that it will be producing 180 lbs of mutton for sale monthly.

We are in the process of expanding our pig pens to accommodate 72 piglets and 12-14 pigs. The goal is to be able to produce 20-25 piglets @ 3months old each, ready for sale every month.

Goals for the farm 2007-July 2009

The farm will be one of the major focuses for Teen Challenge in 2007 and beyond, self-sufficiency being the goal in 2 years.
To this end, we want to erect another chicken pen by year end and the final one in July of 2008 (to produce 6000 chickens monthly).

  • 3000 chickens every 4-6 weeks
  • 3400 eggs monthly
  • 150 layers
  • We have expanded our egg operation from 50 layers to 150 layers in March 2007

We want to establish our own Cold storage delivery service among small farmers (by August 2007) with a one-truck fleet and a 2 truck fleet by March 2008 as well as our slaughter plant by July 2009.
