Session 4 Abomination of Desolation: Understanding the
              Basics
            I. JESUS CALLED US TO SEE THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION
Jesus called His people “to see” the abomination
              of desolation
15“Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’
spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place”
(whoever reads, let him understand), 16“then let those who
are in Judea flee to the mountains…21then there will be great
tribulation, such as has not been…” (Mt. 24:15-16,
              21)
Paul and John elaborated on it
3 Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will
not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is
revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4 He will oppose and will
exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped,
so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself
to be God. (2 Thes. 2:3-4)
15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image
of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all
who refused to worship the image to be killed.
              (Rev. 13:15)
Jesus made three direct references to Daniel’s prophecies:
            • The Abomination of Desolation
15“Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’
spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place”
(whoever reads, let him understand), (Mt. 24:15)
13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said
to him, “How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled—the
vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes
desolation, the surrender of the sanctuary and the trampling underfoot
of the LORD’s people?” (Dan. 8:13)
27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’
In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice
and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that
causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on
              him. (Dan. 9:27)
31 “His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple
fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set
up the abomination that causes desolation. (Dan. 11:31)
11 “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and
the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be
              1,290 days. (Dan. 12:11)
            • The Great Tribulation
21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning
of the world until now—and never to be equaled again. (Mt.
              24:21)
“At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your
people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has
not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that
time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the
              book—will be delivered. (Dan. 12:1)
            • The Son of Man coming on the clouds
30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven.
And then all the peoples of the earth[c] will mourn when they see
the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great
              glory. (Mt. 24:30)
14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations
and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an
everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is
one that will never be destroyed. (Dan. 7:14)
Jesus compared the people and circumstances in the end
times to those in the days of Noah
37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of
the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were
eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the
day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would
happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how
it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in
the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will
be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what
day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of
the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming,
he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken
              into. (Mt. 24:37-43)
The Antichrist will make a covenant with many nations that will
              allow this to take place
27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’
In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice
and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that
causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on
              him. (Dan. 9:27)
The abomination of desolation is referred to eight times
              in the Bible.
31 “His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple
fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set
up the abomination that causes desolation. (Dan. 11:31)
11 “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and
the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be
              1,290 days. (Dan. 12:11)
15 “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the
abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the
prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— (Mt.
              24:15)
14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’
standing where it does not belong—let the reader understand—then
let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains (Mk. 13:14)
            Paul
3 Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will
not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is
revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4 He will oppose and will
exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped,
so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself
to be God. (2 Thes. 2:3-4)
            John
11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two
horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercised all
the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth
and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had
been healed. 13 And it performed great signs, even causing fire
to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people.
14 Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf
of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It
ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded
by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second beast was given power
to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image
could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be
killed. 16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and
poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or
on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless
they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number
              of its name.
18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate
the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number
              is 666. (Rev. 13:11-18)
II. WHAT IS THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION? A QUICK OVERVIEW
The main event emphasized in the Old Testament is the stopping
              of the sacrifices
(Dan. 11:31)
11 “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and
the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be
              1,290 days. (Dan. 12:11)
9If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his
mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10he himself shall also drink
of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength
into the cup of His indignation. (Rev. 14:9-10)
III. THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION: A CLOSER LOOK
15He[False Prophet] was granted power to give breath to the image
of the beast that the image of the beast should both speak and cause
as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.
16He causes all…to receive a mark on their right hand or on
their foreheads, 17and that no one may buy or sell except one who
              has the mark… (Rev. 13:15-18)
            Image of the Beast:
14 Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf
of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It
ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded
by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second beast was given power
to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image
could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be
              killed. (Rev. 13:14-15)
9 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If
anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on
their forehead or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine
of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the
cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in
the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke
of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest
day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for
anyone who receives the mark of its name.” (Rev. 14:
              9-11)
2 And I saw what looked like a sea of glass glowing with fire and,
standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious over the
beast and its image and over the number of its name. They held harps
given them by God (Rev. 15:2)
2 The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land, and
ugly, festering sores broke out on the people who had the mark of
the beast and worshiped its image. (Rev. 16:2)
20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who
had performed the signs on its behalf. With these signs he had deluded
those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.
The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning
              sulfur. (Rev. 19:20)
4 I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority
to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because
of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God. They
had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its
mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned
with Christ a thousand years. (Rev. 20:4)
            Mark of the Beast:
16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free
and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,
17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark,
which is the name of the beast or the number of its name. (Rev.
              13:16-17)
3Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day [Jesus’
return] will not come unless the falling away comes first,
and the man of sin [Antichrist] is revealed, the son of
perdition, 4who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called
God [associated with God] or that is worshiped, so that he sits
as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God...
9The coming of the lawless one [Antichrist] is according
to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders…
              (2 Thes. 2:3-9)
IV. THE MAGNITUDE OF THE DESOLATION
Jesus referred to the Abomination of Desolation and the
              Great Tribulation.
15“…when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’…16let
those who are in Judea flee to the mountains…21There will
be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of
the world until this time…22And unless those days were shortened,
no flesh would be saved [from physical death]; but for the elect’s
sake those days will be shortened.” (Mt. 24:15-22)
            Tribulation:
1“At that time…there shall be a time of trouble, such
as never was since there was a nation, even to that time. And at
that time your people shall be delivered…” (Dan.12:1)
15The four angels…were released to kill a third of mankind.
              (Rev. 9:15)
33The slain of the LORD shall be from one end of the earth to the
              other... (Jer. 25:33)
1The LORD makes the earth empty [of people]…3The land shall
              be entirely emptied…
6The inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men are left.
              (Isa. 24:1-6)
            V. THE END-TIME HARVEST
14“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all
the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will
come. 15Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’
spoken of by Daniel…standing in the holy place…”
              (Mt. 24:14-15)
3Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come
unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin [Antichrist]
is revealed, the son of perdition… (2 Thes. 2:3)
VI. DANIEL’S PROPHECIES ABOUT THE ABOMINATION OF
              DESOLATION
The abomination of desolation was referred to four times
              by Daniel
13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said
to him, “How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled—the
vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes
desolation, the surrender of the sanctuary and the trampling underfoot
of the LORD’s people?” (Dan. 8:13)
31 “His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple
fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set
up the abomination that causes desolation. (Dan. 11:31)
11From the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the
abomination of desolation is setup, there shall be one thousand
two hundred and ninety days [1,290 days]. (Dan.12:11)
There will be no rest
day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for
anyone who receives the mark of its name.” (Rev.14:9-11)
3…that Day will not come unless…the man of sin is revealed,
the son of perdition, 4…so that he sits as God in the temple
of God, showing himself that he is God. (2 Thes. 2:3-4)
That number
              is 666. (Rev. 13:14-18)
15“…when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’…standing
              in the holy place”…
              (Mt. 24:15)
14“…when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’…standing
              where it ought not…”
              (Mk. 13:14)
31“They shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there
the abomination of desolation… 32But the people who know their
God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits [miracles]. 33And
those of the people who understand shall instruct many…34Now
when they fall [martyrdom], they shall be aided with a little help…35And
some of those of understanding shall fall [martyrdom], to refine
              them, purify them, and make them white, until the time of the end;
because it is still for the appointed time.” (Dan.
              11:31-35)
23“Therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision…25Know
therefore and understand…27In the middle of the week he [Antichrist]
shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of
abominations shall be one who makes desolate…” (Dan.
              9:23-27)
13I heard a holy one speaking…, “How long will the
vision be, concerning the daily sacrifices and the transgression
of desolation, the giving of both the sanctuary and the host to
be trampled underfoot?” 14He said to me, “For two thousand
three hundred days [2,300 days]; then the sanctuary shall be cleansed.”
              (Dan. 8:13-14)
The Millennial Temple will be built by Jesus
3 Many peoples will come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
to the temple of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways,
so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law will go out from Zion,
the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. (Isa. 2:3)
6 Herds of camels will cover your land,
young camels of Midian and Ephah.
And all from Sheba will come,
              bearing gold and incense
and proclaiming the praise of the LORD.
10 “Foreigners will rebuild your walls,
and their kings will serve you.
Though in anger I struck you,
in favor I will show you compassion.
13 “The glory of Lebanon will come to you,
the juniper, the fir and the cypress together,
              to adorn my sanctuary;
and I will glorify the place for my feet. (Isa. 60:6, 10,
              13)
26 I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be an everlasting
covenant. I will establish them and increase their numbers, and
I will put my sanctuary among them forever. 27 My dwelling place
will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people.
28 Then the nations will know that I the LORD make Israel holy,
when my sanctuary is among them forever.’” (Ezek.
              37:26-28)
11 “Many nations will be joined with the LORD in that day
and will become my people. I will live among you and you will know
that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you. (Zech. 2:11)
12 Tell him this is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Here is
the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his
place and build the temple of the LORD. 13 It is he who will build
the temple of the LORD, and he will be clothed with majesty and
will sit and rule on his throne. And he[e] will be a priest on his
throne. And there will be harmony between the two.’ 14 The
crown will be given to Heldai, Tobijah, Jedaiah and Hen[g] son of
Zephaniah as a memorial in the temple of the LORD. 15 Those who
are far away will come and help to build the temple of the LORD,
and you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you. This
will happen if you diligently obey the LORD your God.” (Zech.
              6:12-15)
16 Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem
will go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD Almighty,
and to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles. 17 If any of the peoples
of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the
LORD Almighty, they will have no rain. 18 If the Egyptian people
do not go up and take part, they will have no rain. The LORD will
bring on them the plague he inflicts on the nations that do not
go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles. 19 This will be
the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that
do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.
20 On that day HOLY TO THE LORD will be inscribed on the bells of
the horses, and the cooking pots in the LORD’s house will
be like the sacred bowls in front of the altar.
21 Every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the LORD Almighty,
and all who come to sacrifice will take some of the pots and cook
in them. And on that day there will no longer be a Canaanite in
the house of the LORD Almighty. (Zech. 14:16-21)
            VII. REMOVING THE SACRIFICES
11 It set itself up to be as great as the commander of the army
of the LORD; it took away the daily sacrifice from the LORD, and
his sanctuary was thrown down. 12 Because of rebellion, the LORD’s
people[a] and the daily sacrifice were given over to it. It prospered
in everything it did, and truth was thrown to the ground.
13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to
him, “How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled—the
vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes
desolation, the surrender of the sanctuary and the trampling underfoot
              of the LORD’s people?” (Dan. 8:11, 12, 13)
(Dan. 11:31)
11 “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and
the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be
              1,290 days. (Dan. 12:11)
27Then he shall confirm a covenant…he shall bring an end
              to sacrifice… (Dan. 9:27)
31And forces shall be mustered by him…then they shall take
away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of desolation.
              (Dan. 11:31)
11“And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away,
and the abomination of desolation is setup, there shall be one thousand
two hundred and ninety days [1,290 days].” (Dan.12:11)
VIII. WHY THE PRINCE IN DANIEL 9:27 IS NOT JESUS
27“Then he [Antichrist] shall confirm a covenant
with many [nations] for one week [7 years]; but in the
middle of the week [3½ years] he shall bring an
end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall
be one [Antichrist] who makes desolate, even until the
consummation, which is determined, is poured out on the desolate
              [Antichrist].” (Dan. 9:27)
