Session #6 - Joshua a Types and Shadows of Jesus Part #2

1•  Joshua's Great Battle

Now it came to pass when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it—as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to Ai and its king—and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,  2  that they feared greatly, because Gibeon  was  a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it  was  greater than Ai, and all its men  were  mighty.  3  Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying,  4  “Come up to me and help me, that we may attack Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.”  5  Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish,  and  the king of Eglon, gathered together and went up, they and all their armies, and camped before Gibeon and made war against it. (Joshua 10:1-5)

From the earliest chapter of the Bible Jerusalem was a Holy City of The Lord.

18  Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he  was  the priest of God Most High.  (Genesis 14:18)

This Melchizedek was king of Salem (Jerusalem) and priest of God Most High. The name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; “king of Salem” means “king of peace.”

Another shadow - Melchizedek is presented as a type of Christ.

1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,  2  to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,”  3  without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.

4  Now consider how great this man  was,  to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils.  5  And indeed those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, though they have come from the loins of Abraham;  6  but he whose genealogy is not derived from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.  7  Now beyond all contradiction the lesser is blessed by the better.  8  Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he  receives them,  of whom it is witnessed that he lives.  9  Even Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, so to speak,  10  for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him. (Hebrews 7:1–10)

A. Adoni-zedec King of Jerusalem , in Hebrew his name means “King of Righteousness”. But he was far from righteous. He was an Amorite-Canaanite King at a time when that culture was deeply into the worship of the gods Baal and Ashtoreth.

As the end-times Antichrist, will also enter into power “peaceably” (Daniel 11) and present himself as a substitute for true Lord of Righteousness, Jesus Christ.

2  And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer. (Revelation 6: 2)

11  Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him  was  called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. (Revelation 19:11)

Jesus warned that deception will be rife in the end time.

8  And He said:  “Take heed that you not be deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am  He, ' and, ‘The time has drawn near.'   Therefore do not   go after them. (Luke 21:8)

The Apostle Paul prophesied that the Antichrist or “son of perdition” will sit in the temple of God, proclaiming that he is God and exalting himself over The Lord.

2  But even after we had suffered before and were spitefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God in much conflict. (1 Thessalonians 2:2)

Rebuilding the temple - For the first time in hundreds of years, there are serious preparations underway to build the Third Temple prophesied in Scripture.

A Plan of Destruction

AS Adonizedec's hostility towards God's people is obvious.
SO too will the Antichrist seek to persecute and kill the saints of God in the end-times.

  7  It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation.  (Revelation 13:7)

AS the pagan King Adonizedec formed a confederation with four kings to go wage war against the Israelites by attacking one of their allies.

SO in the end times, the Bible informs that the Antichrist will also form a confederation with other Kings.

  12  “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. (Revelation 17:12)

B. Hoham King of Hebron.
HEBRON means, 'league,' 'association' ‘alliance'

5 With one mind they plot together; they form an alliance against you— (Psalms 83: 5)

C. Piram King of Jarmuth
PIRAM means like a wild ass.

12 He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand against him.” (Gen 16: 12a)

D. Japhia King of Lachish
The meaning of Japhia is bright; brilliant; gleaming; glowing; splendid.

12  “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How  you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! (Isa 14:12 )

AS the Antichrist claims to be Messiah and the Muslims will accept him as their Mahdi . He will shine for his moment under the sun, but will to be brought low ultimately.

SO Jesus is referred to as the Bright Morning Star:

16  “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches.   I am the Root and the Offspring of David,   the Bright and Morning Star.” (Rev 22:16)

E. Debir King of Eglon
Debir means Sanctuary and this might also symbolize a type and a shadow because in the end time the Antichrist will set up the abomination of desolation in the Sanctuary.

Abomination of Desolation

27  Then he shall confirm a  covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, (Daniel 9:27a)

Jesus says in Matthew 24 that the abomination will be "standing in the holy place."

15  “Therefore when you see the   ‘abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place”  (whoever reads, let him understand),  (Mat. 25: 15)

The term "holy place" is found in only one other place in the New Testament in Acts and refers to the Temple in Jerusalem.

8  crying out, “Men of Israel, help! This is the man who teaches all  men  everywhere against the people, the law, and this place; and furthermore he also brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place.”  (Acts 21:28)  

Eglon (Calf like) Calves were commonly made use of in sacrifices, and are therefore frequently mentioned in Scripture. The "fatted calf" was regarded as the choicest of animal food.

18  And I will give the men who have transgressed My covenant, who have not performed the words of the covenant which they made before Me, when they cut the calf in two and passed between the parts of it— (Jeremiah 34:18)

This was the ancient and most solemn way of making a covenant.

Joshua was indeed a type of Jesus Christ and his war to lead God's nation into the Promised Land was a shadow of Jesus Christ's future defeat of the Antichrist and reclaiming the Earth for the saints of The Lord.
