Underlying principles
In recent years numerous parishes and in extension
some of the communities across Barbados has been significantly affected
by numerous social problems including social conflict, drug abuse,
poverty and unemployment.
Initiatives between the Barbados Government, some
International Agencies and Local Non- Governmental Organizations
have sought to provide assistance through the creation of intervention
and Educational program to address such problems.
With this culture of collaboration well established
it is believed and expected, in the fraternity of social practitioners,
that a new level of approach is required to effectively provide
impetus to the intervention of Educational programs and that all
social partners and institutions need to come to the fore and make
their significant contribution to the socio-economic development
of Barbados.
As one looks and make an analysis of the socio-economic
development of Barbados, that many speak glowingly of and fondly
remember as the good-old days, one can’t help but recognized
the role of the Church or to use a new terminology, Faith based
organization, made in the development of youths and young adults
indeed the overall impact they had on communities and villages in
the wider area of Education.
In recent decades Faith based organizations and
churches have for the most part taken a back seat and left much
of the socio-economic development of our youths to Community based
organizations.
Another quick analysis will see many Churches and
Faith based organizations have established themselves outside or
on the peripheral but not with in most communities.
However in recent times some leaders of Faith based
organizations have been awakened to the role that they must play
in our society overall development. They have been bold to move
outside of their comfort zones and the walls of established churches
and to move into communities seeking to make a contribution to tackle
some of the social ills that have plagued this Island.
When one looks at Churches one see the wealth of
humane resources and personnel that lies in many churches, professionals
from all walks of life, many who have already been trained and capable
of working with, mentoring and giving guidance to youths and young
adults. Such persons can lend to and enhance most of the intervention
and Educational programs being done in communities.
Alas most of these professionals have moved from
communities to live in the Heights and Terraces and new Developmental
areas that have become part of the Barbados landscape.
Many would have spent considerable years away from Barbados pursuing
studies. Others their work and vocational and other social activities
would have limited their involvement in such programs.
In a nutshell, many person with the skills and knowledge
to make a meaningful contribution to the socio-economic development
and empowerment of youths in troubled communities and areas, have
not for various reasons been able to make their contribution.
As churches such as House of Freedom, step up to
the plate and make a bold move to become more active and to take
a giant stride forward to play their much needed role in the empowerment
and development of communities, such anomalies in various ways,
will be addressed, thus opening ways and avenues for such persons
to make their contribution.
This program will allow the House of freedom to address some of
the above mentioned areas and to moved into a community and establish
its presence for the overall benefit of the community and the area.
Finally the House of Freedom and most of its leadership have a close
affinity to the Warrens Area.
The vision of the Church and its programmed through divine appointment
is rooted in the area. Its energies and synergies, motivation and
determination and aspirations are all locked to this area.
Thus it sees the Friendship Community Initiative
as a start in its Social developmental program.
