Fresh fruit & vegetable juices have been shown to possess remarkable health-promoting properties and have been used for centuries to help treat a range of ailments.
Fresh mangos Lime juice was, for example, found to be an effective cure for scurvy in the sixteenth century and this saved thousands of sailors' lives on their long voyages around the world.

In more recent times, scientists have identified the nutritional and biochemical properties of freshly-prepared fruit and vegetable juices which account for their use in helping treat so many health problems

VEGETABLE JUICES

Vegetable juices are lower in calories than fruit juices, and almost all kinds of vegetables can be juiced. To start out, here are some suggested vegetables that work well on a regular basis:

CarrotwThe leafy greens: parsley, lettuces and spinich.

The base vegetables: carrots, cabbage, beets, celery, cucumbers, broccoli and pumpkin to name but a few!

Carrots are well known as the universal vegetable for juicing. Carrot juice has been well known as being a miracle juice, or “the king of juices”. Many people around the world have found that if they include carrot juice in their daily diet, that their overall health improves enormously. A common misconception is that carrot juice would be bitter or too deep in flavor. In reality, when carrots are juiced, they are actually very sweet tasting, and they mix great with other fruit juices, especially apple juice. Carrot juice blends with practically all other juices. It is a delicious nourishing beverage for all members of the family at all times and it should be an important part of the diet in cases of illness. You can also use carrot juice to lose weight by adding celery while juicing. This will help decrease the sweetness of the carrot juice. Carrot juice is best ingested in the afternoon because of the burst of energy that always follows.

Coconut water For years we have heard persons extolling the benefits of coconut water for the "pressure" recently a study was carried out by the University of the West Indies. The study concluded that 30 per cent of the adult population of African descent in the Caribbean suffers from hypertension and, for a significant number of those affected, it is found that the regular medication is not particularly effective. The study concluded with the suggestion that the regular consumption of either coconut water or mauby, but particularly a mixture of the two, is effective in bringing about the control of hypertension.

Breadfruit can also be blended into a juice and we are sourcing old traditional Barbadian recepts.

United Caribbean Trust is researching these old recepts to introduce them into the schools as a means of not only improving our children's health but also introducing the 'Child Sponsorship Programme' to the schools.
