GRENADA - N.W coast

The trip to Gouyave was fortunately very smooth as these cigarette boat are high speed movers and shakers ~ literally!
Ras Joseph of the twelve tribes of Israel and a very serious looking Judah, leaving the bay out of Hillsborough
Dawnay St John, desaster management project co-ordinator. enjoying a cold coke before we hit high seas over Kickin Jenny!
Head of security at the helm, Dawnay's son Francis. (Also head chef!)
Arrival at Gouyave, beaten and bashed but surviving.
We were shown the damages to the jetty, which we did not see during our first visit, the end nearest the town is collapsing from beneath, possible erosion that undermined the structure. The huge gaping hole will be cordoned off so no one will fall in.

Miss Mitchell, the public health nurse for St Marks and St Johns was glad to see us and introduced us to her staff as many of them had just come in to complete the daily records of clinical work.
We were given a breakdown of how some of the supplies were distributed and a grateful populace substantiated the gratitude to Barbados for their assistance.

Seen her the acting Midwifery Supervisor, Miss Joseph.

20 babies under the age of 12 months have been identified as vulnerable in Gouyave, however, the Health centre Staff monitor their progress frequently.

Property damage has started to be repaired and the drying out process is underway.

The kids are as resillient as ever, playing with 'new' toys and enjoying the school break prior to school starting on October 11th.

Seen here with Judah.

Mitchell has not distributed the exercise books as yet, waiting for homes to finish drying out their furnishings and the kids are helping their families.
Still a large requirement for additional baby needs especially foodstuff and bottled water; the 20 babies identified as vulnerable by Nurse Joseph, Family practitioner and nurse midwife, are being followed up through home visits by Centre personnel; who are working overtime to ensure the wellness of their small community.

Other children in Grenada are not so fortunate. There is few school to attend and over 200 students are looking to be relocated in Carriacou.Urgent help is needed in finding foster homes and assistance to the schools in Carriacou that had their challanges prior to Ivan.

Drinking water is always most welcomed, Nuggit seen here after catching this bottle from our boat prior to leaving

Gouyave health centre There will be need for school supplies in the near future, but Miss Miss Mitchell gave us some of their meager supplies to supplement the stuff we are taking into Subise and upon leaving the Centre continued chatting up some of the residents along the way.

Gouyave health clinic sex educationOne young lady proudly demonstrated the condoms she had obtained from the Clinic as she doesn’t need a baby at this time, she says. Public education is well and hard at work here in Gouyave and the youth are taking the information seriously.

Canon Philips of the Anglican Church, is doing fine, according to Miss Mitchell and she will keep us posted on his condition.

Leaving GouvayePacking up and heading north around the coastline to Soubies.

We left Gouyave feeling as though we had truly accomplished SOMETHING!
