Traditionally
we think of September as "Back to School" month. On the island
of Nevis, a brand new school will be opening in September. Islanders are
impressed with the speed of construction (construction began in April),
the quality of the finshed building, and the low cost. The insulated wall
panels make comfortable, cool classrooms. And backs every building with
a $14 million U. S. dollar warranty against damage from hurricane force
(up to 165 mph) sustained winds and earthquake tremors. Additionally, this
school is resistant to fire, termite infestation and rot. The Nevis government
will realize further savings in maintenance costs for this school, which
could also be used as a safe hurricane shelter for the community it serves.
Congratulations to the Nevis government officials who have made this
long-term commitment to education!
The schools in Grenada and Carriacou have been seriously damaged by Ivan,
below is an example.
Mr. Henry Steel the principle of the
Hillsborough Government School informs us that his school had serious
problems prior to Ivan and we understand from him that monies from
the World Bank have been allocated for rebuilding it.
Snarled galvanise from the roof resting in the
damaged trees in the grounds.
Below the devastation within the class rooms. What
is most disconcerting is the significant damages done to teaching
materials, children's books and equipment.
The 235 pupils are now being housed
in the public library and the community centre.
