UNITED
CARIBBEAN TRUST -
Director
of Operation Mobilisation (OM) Peter Maiden, addresses the congregation
gathered at the Abundant Life Assembly for the opening service of Jesus
Week.
There is a danger faced by churches in Barbados which lies in the advent
of secularism and materialism pervading its walls. This is the fear articulated
by Director of Operation Mobilisation (OM), Peter Maiden, who delivered
the message at yesterday's ser vice signalling the opening of Jesus Week
2005, held at the Abundant Life Assembly.
"Materialism broke the heart of church in the UK" Maiden noted,
saying that this occurred as a result of worshippers feeling they no longer
needed anything more th an what they had.
'They no longer felt they needed to come together,' he
explained, urging those in attendance to ensure that such did not occur
in Barbados.
'I pray that such will never happen to the church of Barbados,
that you will always see a great need for God as without Him we can do
nothing,' Maiden reiterated.
'God is calling on the churches of our nation to come
together in direct obedience to Him and His mandate in terms of what He
wants to achieve for Barbados,' agreed cha ir of the Jesus Week team,
Patrick Tannis who spoke with the Barbados Advocate at yesterday's opening
service.
Tannis said that the partnering with
the Ministry of Social Transformation was both integral and natural
to the process as both it and the church maintained similar roles
in society. 'Jesus was the first Minister of Social Transformation,'
he noted.
He also noted that Christians from all over the globe
were flying into the island to participate in the week of events.
Throug hout Jesus Week nightly services will be held in
Queens Park from 7 p.m., the first of which will be addressed by Reverend
Lucille Baird who opens the series of services tonight. The week's activities
will culminate with the staple 'March for Jesus' on Saturday at 4 p.m.
followed by 'Worship in the City'.
'We have been marching for 15 years and marching will
continue to be a part of it,' Tannis assured, 'but now God is calling
for the churches to come together and be one as He and His Son are one,'
he stressed.
