Parliamentarians
embrace 'Jesus Week'
Both sides of the political divide in Barbados, as well
as all of the religious denominations on the island, have thrown their
full support behind the Jesus Week activities, which run from May 6 to
14.
Speaking at a press conference at the House of Assembly, Speaker of the
House Ishmael Roett stated that although Parliament was often considered
a place that did not support such activities, there were many Members
of Parliament on both sides that had given their lives to Christ and acknowledged
the important role He played in helping them to carry out their work.
He added that Jesus Week had nothing to do with political parties and
both Prime Minister Owen Arthur and Leader of the Opposition Clyde Mascoll
fully supported the venture and all of the MPs would be fully involved
in the celebrations.
Chairman of the Jesus Week Committee, Patrick Tannis
of Operation Mobilisation said it was fitting that Parliament embraced
the week of activities since "we need to have the fusion of God's
principles with the state to ensure that ethics, morals and values continue
to be symbols of this great nation'. Apostle Dr. Lucille Baird was pleased
to note that "the walls of denominational segregation are coming
down" and all of the churches in Barbados had come on board for the
event.
Jesus Week starts this Friday afternoon with a forum for business persons
at the Accra Beach Hotel entitled,'The Power of One: Making an Impact
in the Workplace'. later in the evening there will be a Teen Forum at
the Abundant Life Assembly. An ecumenical service to mark the official
start of the week will be held on Sunday May 8 at 8 a.m.
At the Abundant Life Assembly. the International Director of Operation
Mobilisation, Dr. Peter Maiden, is expected to address the congregation.
Later that evening there will be a forum for single people at the
Abundant Life Assembly. There will also be special forums held for
men and women during the course of the week.
Between May 9 and May 13, there will be a series of open
air worship sessions in Queens Park entitled 'Word in the City', starting
at 7 p.m. each night. On Saturday May 14, starting at 4 p.m., the annual
March for Jesus will be held. This will also start at Queens Park and
will culminate with 'Worship in the City', an open air service.
