Following the
Habitat for Humanity model UCT seeks to bring relief to hundreds
of women in Barbados that may otherwise live on the streets
or end up in prostitution. This program is not a giveaway
program. In addition to the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners
invest hours of their own labor (sweat equity) into building
their home and the houses of others within the community.
|
The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments will
be used to keep 'The WISH Center' self sufficient. Mortgages will
be assessed on a sliding scale depending upon their income with a
ceiling of US $300 per month.
Purchase plan:
UCT seeks to partner with the local Trust funds,
European Trusts, Churches and other NGO's to purchase land from
Fortesque plantation, (adjacent to the ‘Women’s Inner
Healing Center’ ) and erect the first 'Starter Homes'
The families/women will be identified from 'The
WISH Center'. They will enter into a contract with UCT to commit
to pay back the cost of the house over a 10 year period as an interest
free loan. No deposit is required for the house but they will need
to pass the interview and sign the legal contracts to agree to repay
the cost of the house with a maximum rent of US $300 per month.
This money will enable UCT to continue to support
'The WISH Center'. and even build further modular homes in the future.
It will also enable these once abused women to regain their self
respect and dignity as they become home owners instead of receivers
of charity.
