Proverbs 27: 9
Ointment and perfume delight the heart,
And the sweetness of a man’s friend gives delight by hearty counsel.

If you walk into a room there can be a perfume it may delight your heart or you want to run away! Ointment and perfume delight the heart.

If you have a good friend they will delight your heart, there is something sweet about that sort of friendship.

Proverbs 12: 26
The righteous should choose his friends carefully,
For the way of the wicked leads them astray.

Whoever you hang around you are going to become like them, influenced, tainted, contaminated by them.

Proverbs 13: 20
He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will be destroyed.

Notice he was not wise until he started walking with wise men. But the companion of fools will be destroyed. You will be destroyed right along with the fools. You begin to talk like them, think like them, you begin to get the results that they get - it will destroy you.

Who you hang out with will make a difference. You pick up ways of thinking, talking, responding to people, carrying your self. You will change without effort by who you hang around.

Listen to what they are saying, Jesus tells us in Luke 6: 45b
‘For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.’

Proverbs 20:19
He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets;
Therefore do not associate with one who flatters with his lips.

Do not associate with one who flatters with his lips. Flattery and encouragement are both the same thing it all depends on the motive of your heart.

Be a person of integrity and to be like that you need to associate with wise people that have integrity. If you hang around people that are always angry you will become angry and explosive.

Proverbs 18: 24
A man who has friends must himself be friendly,
But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

A covenant blood friend will stick closer than even a family sibling born in the same water of the womb, thus the saying ‘Blood is thicker than water’ But we have misunderstood covenant and think that applies to blood family.

Proverbs 17: 17
A friend loves at all times,
And a brother is born for adversity.

There is competition with brothers and it can lead to adversity.
A friend loves at all times, not agrees with you at all times, but they love at all times.

Proverbs 27: 17
As iron sharpens iron,
So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

Hang around people that are iron. It takes a solid person, to be honest with a friend in love.
To sharpen the countenance of a friend. Sometimes these situations are not pleasant.

Proverbs 27: 6
Faithful are the wounds of a friend,
But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

The wounds of a friends, if you are a friend you will be honest, not cruel, but honest council and help. A true friend will tell you the truth

Proverbs 19:7
All the brothers of the poor hate him;
How much more do his friends go far from him!
He may pursue them with words, yet they abandon him.

Poor is not just financially poor. Some people are emotionally poor they are not even able to be sociable.

Don’t always have a better story than your friend. Enjoy their story as well. Interact with them. But ‘poor’ people can’t do that, they have to be the centre of attention.

Proverbs 18:24a
A man who has friends must himself be friendly

Being a good friend is the best way to get good friends.
