c. Teach the Lesson

FIVE STEPS TO KNOWING GOD'S WORD
First, give student a piece of paper, large enough for them to be able to trace around their hand. Have them trace around their hand.

Optional: Download '5 steps to knowing God's Word' visual aid colouring pages

After they are finished with the hand, have a volunteer read each of the verses shown below. Explaining why we are putting each instruction on each finger.

Have the children write the corresponding words:

Hear, Read, Study, Memorize and Meditate on the fingers.

(Show Hand Visual Aid)

On the other side of the hand, write the verse references. When finished, suggest the children keep this in their Bibles to use as a bookmark and a reminder to do all five steps to understand the Bible fully and to allow the Word of God to richly fill their lives.

HEAR (The little finger is the only finger you can fit in your ear! Demonstrate)
Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the Word of Christ.

READ (The thumb is used to turn a page when you are reading, demonstrate)
Revelation 1:3a Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy.

STUDY (Teachers points her finger and tells you ‘Study’ demonstrate)
Acts 17:11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined (studied) the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

MEMORIZE (The tallest finger reminds us of our pledge to God that we will hide His Word in our heart)
Psalm 119:11 I have hidden (memorized) your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

MEDITATE (The ring fingers reminds us that if we love God we want to meditate on His ways)
Psalm 119:15 I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.

IS THE BIBLE TRUE?

The Bible is in perfect harmony from beginning to end—even though it deals with many difficult subjects. Each part needs the other parts to complete the story. The Bible is the complete revelation of how God has provided salvation for all who will believe and receive His wonderful gift.

Some of the books of the Bible were written by prophets. These were men who spoke God’s words to the people. They told about coming events many years before they happened.

The purpose of prophecy is to let you know that God exists and that He has a plan for this world and for each individual in it. The fact of fulfilled prophecy is perhaps the strongest argument for the divine inspiration of the Bible. For example, the prophet Micah in chapter 5 verse 2 predicted the birthplace of Jesus 700 years before his birth!

In his book Evidence that Demands a Verdict, Josh McDowell gives 61 different prophecies found throughout the Old Testament concerning the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.1 The New Testament reports the fulfillment of each of these prophecies in detail. We cannot take time to look at all of them now. However, there are two prophecies concerning Christ given in the next two questions.

______________________________________________________

1. We can test the reliability of the Bible by seeing if its predictions came true.

The prophet Micah predicted the birthplace of Jesus 700 years before He was born.

Read Micah 5:2 . . . . .
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah (EHF-ru-tha),
Though you are small among the clans of Judah,
Out of you will come for me
One who will be ruler over Israel,
Whose origins are from of old,
From ancient times.”

Read Matthew 2: 3 – 6 to see where Jesus was born

3  When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4  And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

5  So they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet:

6  'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
Are not the least among the rulers of Judah;
For out of you shall come a Ruler
Who will shepherd My people Israel.' "

Where was Jesus to be born? . . . . . (in Bethlehem)

Mary lived in northern Palestine in Nazareth for most of her pregnancy. Bethlehem was in southern Palestine. However, the Roman government ordered a census to be taken for tax purposes. Everyone was to return to the hometown of their ancestors to be registered. Joseph and Mary were from the royal line of King David, whose hometown was Bethlehem (1 Samuel 16:1).

Scripture was fulfilled because Jesus was born while they were in Bethlehem, not Nazareth. Only God could have brought all those different factors together at the right time. Only God could do it.

2. King David foretold many details of the crucifixion in the songs and poetry he wrote more than a thousand years before Christ.

He foretold - "They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment". Psalm 22: 18

In John 19: 23 – 24 we learn...

The soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

"Let's not tear it," they said to one another. "Let's decide by lot who will get it."

3. Summarize what Jesus said about the Old Testament read

Luke 24:27, 44 ...(Everything written about Jesus in the Old Testament had to come true.)

Jesus said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."

The time of the coming of the Messiah, His death, the destruction of Jerusalem, and the destruction of the temple were prophesied in the book of Daniel hundreds of years before they happened. These fulfilled prophecies also confirm the fact that the Bible is a divinely inspired book.

Prayer: Father, we thank you for giving us the Bible to be our guide through life. Help us to remember that we can always depend on the Bible to point us in the right direction. Amen.

There is only one thing that we can trust to always point us in the right direction, and that is the Bible. It will always point to Jesus and Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life, and no man comes to the Father but by me."

What does the expression ‘God is” mean to you now since you have studied this lesson.

6. APPLICATION / ENCOUNTERING GOD:

CLOSING PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father we thank you for your Word, that all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching us, for sometimes rebuking us correcting and training us in righteousness. We want to hear the Word because faith comes from hearing the message. Help us to set aside time to read your Word and study and examine the Scriptures every day. We want to hide your word in our hearts so that I might not sin against you as we consider your ways and walk in them. In Jesus name we pray. Amen

What did God call you out off? .............................

________________________________________________________

4. I am God's friend

14 You are my friends if you do what I command.   15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.   John 15:14-15

7. I am an heir of God

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Romans 8:17

What must we be prepared to do? .............................

What promise can we hold onto? .............................

________________________________________________________

One reason we can believe the Bible is true is that one person who always spoke the truth confirmed the fact that it was true.

Write what you see when you think of God. Write the first thing that comes into your mind. Write what is real to you. What or who is God to you?

Some people think that God is-

. a great person far away

. nature

. a power or force in space

. a creator who made us and left us alone

. a bright, glorious light located in heaven

. a patriarch who sits on His throne in heaven and is frustrated by all that is happening on earth.
